「Let Me Get This Straight」で「状況を整理させてください」の意味

今回取り上げるLet me get this straight.は、相手の困惑させる言動の主旨を確認するときや、自分の中で曖昧な事を明確にするときに使われるおなじみのフレーズです。

このフレーズ中のthisがその曖昧なものを指し、それをstraightにさせて、と言ってるわけですね。

ということでいつものように、海外ドラマでの実際の使用例を見ていきましょう。

ブレイキング・バッドから

ウォルターが初めてハイゼンベルクと名乗るシーン。自分たちの売ってるメス（ドラッグ）がライバル組織に盗まれ、それを取り戻そうとウォルターは敵のアジトへ単独で乗り込みます。ウォルターの50Gという要求に何のことか思い出した敵ボスは、Let me get this straight.と言ってから状況を整理します。

敵ボス: It's your meeting. Why don't you start talking and tell me what you want?

ウォルター: Fifty thousand dollars.

敵ボス: Oh, man. Fifty G's? How you figure that?

ウォルター: Thirty-five for the pound of meth you stole, and another fifteen for my partner's pain and suffering.

敵ボス: Partner. Oh, yeah, I remember that little bitch. So you must be Daddy. Let me get this straight. I steal your dope, I beat the piss out of your mule boy, and then you walk in here and you bring me more meth? That's a brilliant plan, ese.

ラジの新しい彼女はホラー系ムービーが大好き。今度一緒に見ることになったので、耐性のないラジは親友のハワードと試しに見てみますが・・・。見終わると、ハワードがLet me get this straight.でストーリーを整理します。このように、映画の内容を整理するのでもこのフレーズが使えます。それにしても、このハワードのセリフを聞くだけで怖すぎますね😱

ハワード: Let me get this straight. So, he kills this girl's father, cuts off the guy's face, and is wearing it as a mask while he makes out with her.

ラジ: I'm just gonna say it. That's not okay.

至急外部と連絡を取る必要が出たマイケルは、刑務所ボスのお気に入りティーバッグにボスの携帯電話を使えるよう頼みます。その時、「ボスは知らないだろうけど、俺はお前の本性を知ってる」と脅します。これにティーバッグはLet me get this straight.としてから、ボスにチクるのか（tell on）と凄みます。マイケルはというと、レイプや小児愛好の過去をバラすことを匂わせますが・・・

マイケル: I'm not looking for food,I'm looking for a favor.

ティーバッグ: Why the hell should I do you a favor, huh?

マイケル: 'Cause unlike your new compadres, I know who you are, what you've done and who you've done it to.

ティーバッグ: Let me get this straight. You're saying you gonna tell on me?

マイケル: What I'm saying is: This here is a religious country, and I'm willing to bet the good folks down in panama don't take too kindly to rapists and pedophiles.

チャンドラーとモニカのカップルは、相手が異性とイチャイチャする（flirt）ことの是非を巡って喧嘩中。ドラマLaw and Orderを見ていても、誰とでもいちゃつくと皮肉を言います。それを受けたモニカは、let me get this straight.としてから、チャンドラーはイチャついてOKで、私はだめなの？と確認です。

チャンドラー: So, Monica, do you like Law and Order?

モニカ: Yeah, it's good.

チャンドラー: I found out all this stuff about you. You like Law and Order... ...and you've flirted with every guy in the tri-state area.

モニカ: Okay, let me get this straight. It's okay for you to flirt, but not for me?

最後に

Let me get this straight.は曖昧な状況を確認するのに使われるフレーズでした。枝葉末節を取り除いて、主要な部分が合ってるかの確認ですね。今回取り上げた４つのシーンでは、いずれも自分が理解できないような状況を整理しています。ブレイキング・バッドでは、敵ボスはウォルターがノコノコ出てきて50Gを要求するのが理解できませんし、フレンズでは、モニカはチャンドラーのロジック（モニカはだめで、チャンドラーはOK）が理解できません。

まあ、現実では、そもそもstraightにして確認することさえできない無理難題が降ってきたりするのも事実。let me get this straight.と言えるだけでもマシなのかもしれませんね（笑）　それでは〜
