「Colored Population」

「Colored People」 vs. 「People of Color」

What is the difference between saying colored people and people of color?

colored people」と言うのと「people of color」と言うのでは何が違うんだろう?

The major reason you hear people of _____ instead of _____ people is because the emphasis is that they are a person first who has whatever quality/position.

in the health education world, we have the same logic about health conditions and call it person-first language. (中略) A person isn’t “a schizophrenic” they’re “a person with schizophrenia.”

No one considers it dehumanizing to say “gay person” rather than “person of homosexuality”, for example. I think this one comes down to historical connotation rather than anything to do with the structure of the phrase.

It just dates back to times when using that term was intended to demean.

Grew up in rural Alabama and heard the term “coloreds” used a lot as an insult.

It’s more appropriate to say a person with autism than an autistic person.

No one thinks red car vs car of red makes people think it is red first, and car second.

I’m ok being a tall person, instead of a person of tallness, or bi-racial person, rather than a person of two races

僕は「person of tallness」でなく「tall person」と言われても全然問題ないし、「person of two races」でなく「bi-racial person」と言われて全然構わないよ。

You’re a person who is tall. You’re not JUST a tall person.

Wikipedia

Colored

In the United States and elsewhere, it is now considered a racial pejorative. Historically, the term denoted non-“white” individuals generally. In contemporary English today, the term “people of colour” has become widespread and is considered more acceptable than coloured and is much more frequently used in everyday conversation.
