議論でありがち、「Whataboutism」の意味とは？

それはwhataboutismだよ。
「Whataboutism」の意味
「Whataboutism」は非難されている時に、矛先を別の対象に向けること。
例えば、
野党: 与党は○○でけしからん！
与党: でも、野党もどうなのよ？
とか。
この、「どうなのよ？」が英語で言うと「What about… ?」なので、この矛先そらしをWhataboutismというのでした。「What about」＋「-ism（主義）」で「ホワットアバウティズム」ってことですね。
Wiktionaryによる定義だと
whataboutism
逆側に対する類似する批判を挙げることで批判をそらすプロパガンダ技術。
A propaganda technique where criticisms are deflected by raising corresponding criticisms of the opposite side.
となってます。
でもさ、こんな小難しい定義しなくても
母親: 一郎！ 冷蔵庫のケーキ食べたでしょ。ダメじゃない！
一郎: でもさ、次郎が最初に食べたんだよ
とか、ありがちですよね。自分が何かで批判された時に、人は必死に矛先そらそうとするのです（笑）

なお、この「whataboutism」はネット上での議論等で非常によく出てきます。残念ながら、「What about … ?」とミエミエのフレーズを使う人はいないんですが、議論対象と違うものを持ち出すとwhataboutismにされてしまいますね。
以下、redditにあったwhataboutismの例。ニューヨーク州知事クオモ（民主党）が批判されてるスレです。
共和党の政治家も同じとするコメントに、「Whataboutism」としてから、「別のスレッドを始めれば？」です。
-Okay Republicans. Now you do the same with Abbott and Desantis.
-Whataboutism Why don’t you start another thread.
トランプ元大統領もセクハラしたじゃないかというコメントに、「whataboutismsは止めろ」としてから、「両者共に間違っている」とします
-We just had a president to said he liked to grab women by the pussy and nobody in the GOP missed a beat. Remember?
-Yeah I remember. Stop with the whataboutisms. Trump was wrong, Cuomo is wrong.
以下も同じ。民主党の話をしてるのに、共和党を持ち出すとwhataboutismとツッコミが入ります。
-Not to give Cuomo a pass in any way, but Republicans don’t leave, no matter what they’re accused of.
-Bro this has nothing to do with the situation, you guys always yell whataboutism, and this is literally that.
-Whatabout? Isn’t that what the left keeps accusing the right of doing?
「Howaboutism」はないのか？
ところで、「What about?」があるなら、個人的に、同じ意味の「How about?」から出来る「Howaboutism」もいけると思ったんですけど、残念ながらないようですね。同意語として出てくるのは「whataboutery」や「bothsidesism」。
How about “Howaboutism?”
と主張したいです（笑）
最後に
今回は批判をそらす「Whataboutism」について見てみました。ネット上の議論なんかでよく出てくる単語です。自分が見た海外ドラマでは、まだ出てませんね。
なお、「What about…?」と言うコメでWhataboutismをする人はまだ見たことがないので、逆にやってみると新鮮かもと思いました（笑）
