英語「Throw」の別の意味

そんなthrowは基本的な動詞なので、本当にいろいろな意味を持っているんですよ。その中の一つが「ゲームに意図的に負ける」なんです:

throw

(スポーツ、ビデオゲームで)試合に意図的に負ける。

(sports, video games) To intentionally lose a game.

という感じ。通常は「throw a game」みたいに目的語が付きますね:

カート: I wanted to lose.
父: Kurt, I stuck my neck out for you, and you go and you throw the game?
『glee/グリー』で、わざと負けようとするカートを諭す父

ここで重要なのが「意図的」という部分。頑張った結果負けるんじゃなく、何かの裏の目的があって故意に負けるのです。

Throw The Game

しばしば、「throwing the game」はプロスポーツの世界で使われる。選手とチームは様々な理由で「throwing games」を非難される、より良いトーナメントのシードを得るために、より良いドラフトの選択を得るために、そして非合法な賭けでお金を得るためという廉で。

Most often, the phrase “throwing the game” is used in the context of professional sports. Players and teams can be accused of throwing games for a variety of reasons, including better tournament seeding, better draft picks, and to make money via illegal betting.

throw (v.)

「故意に負ける」の意味は1868年から。

that of “lose deliberately” is from 1868.

と、まず年代が1868年。次に「throw the game」だと、

Throw The Game

「throw the game」の記録された最初の使用は19世紀まで遡る。この文脈では「throw」は「捨てる」や「ポイ投げする」の意味で、競技者は一見意味のあるゲームに勝つことに興味がないことを知らせる。

The earliest recorded written usage of the phrase “throw the game” dates to the 19th century. In this context, the word “throw” means to “discard” or “toss away,” conveying a contestant’s disinterest in winning a seemingly-meaningful game.

とのことです。結局、特定のゲームではなく、様々ゲームで故意に敗れる意味での「throw」が広まっていった感じでしょうか。

新時代の「Throw the Game」

ちなみに、「throw the game」はプロスポーツの文脈で登場すると上の記事にありましたが、実はここ最近になって新たな文脈で使われるようになっています。それがオンラインゲームです。

オンライン上で対戦ゲームをしている時に、故意に負ける行為に対しても「throw the game」が使われるようになっているのでした。これはスポーツでの使われ方をオンラインゲームに持ってきたんですね。ただし、故意でなく単に最適でないプレーで敗れることに対しても「throw the game」が使われているという批判があるようです:

The term “throwing” is losing the original meaning

誰か「throwing」の意味が変化していることに気づいている? この言葉を正しく使ってない人を僕は多く見かけている。

ググれば実際の定義は次のように出てくるだろう。

Throw

口語

(競争や競技)で意図的に負ける、特に賄賂の見返りに

単にダメダメなプレーや最適な選択をしないことは定義から「throwing」ではないんだ、負ける目的でやってない限り。「throwing the game」をするためには君は意図して試合に負けなければならないんだ。君がもし全部不適切にプレーしたとしても、勝つ意志があってプレーしてるならそれは「throwing」ではない。

人々のこの用語の使い方に基づくと、以下のようなものが新しい定義だと僕には思える:

Throw

口語

知りつつ自分の勝つチャンスを減らす

Anybody else notice how the definition of “throwing” has been shifting? I’ve been seeing on these forums and in-game people are not using the term correctly.

There is an actual definition for the word if you were to google it.

Throw

informal

lose (a race or contest) intentionally, especially in return for a bribe.

Someone simply playing poorly or not making optimized choices is by definition not throwing so long as it isn’t done with the intention of losing. You have to be intentionally attempting to lose the match to be throwing the game. Even if you did everything wrong you still can’t be throwing as long as you play with the intent of winning.

Based on how people are using it I assume that the new definition of the term would look something like this:

Throw

informal

knowingly decreasing one’s chances of success

最後に

今回は英語「throw」と日本語「投げる」に試合等に「負ける」に似た意味があるのを見てみました。英語では「故意に」というのが重要で、日本語は「諦める」と言ったニュアンスですね。

ただし、英語でもオンラインゲームでは「故意に」が抜けて使われることもしばしばみたいです。そうなると、英語と日本語で更なる意味の接近がなされますね。

以上、今回はその意味の近さに驚いた「throw」と「投げる」でした。それでは〜
