アメリカの祝日のまとめ
アメリカの海外ドラマを見ている人なら、Fourth of Julyなら独立記念日とすぐ出てくると思います。
そこで気になったのが、アメリカの祝日ってどのくらいあるの？って点。
調べると、TV Tropesの役立つ情報ページに、米国での祝日について簡潔にまとめられていました。
一言で言えば、連邦政府が定めるものは１２個なのだそうです：

アメリカ人は祝うのが好きだ。そのためならどんな言い訳でもする。独立記念日や元日のような大きな行事から、聖パトリックの祝日やシンコ・デ・マヨのような民族的で再度制定された祝日、はたまたスーパーボールのような巨大イベントまで、アメリカ人は仕事や学校を休んでパーティーに行くためなら何でもするんだ。
以下の１２個の祝日は連邦政府の祝日として正式に認められたものである。重要でない官庁は閉じられ、ほとんどの公務員（賞与がない人たち）は有給休暇をもらえる。もし祝日が土曜に当たるのなら、政府は祝日を金曜日にずらし、日曜に当たるのなら翌日の月曜にずらす。
連邦政府の祝日が外国人を（そして時にはアメリカ人自身をも）混乱させる要因の一つは、連邦主義制度の下では、連邦政府は連邦政府自身に対してのみ祝日を定める権限があることだ。連邦政府は州や市政機関、民間会社等に対してこれらの祝日を守るよう強制することはできないのだ。
Americans love to celebrate, and they will find any excuse to do so. Whether it’s a big occasion like the Fourth of July or New Year’s, a re-appropriated ethnic holiday like St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo, or even a big sporting event like the Super Bowl, Americans will do anything to get off of work or school and go out and party.
The following twelve holidays are officially recognized federal holidays. All non-essential government offices are closed, and most public employees get the day off with full pay (those who don’t usually get bonus pay). If a holiday falls on a Saturday, then the government celebrates it on the Friday before, and if it falls on a Sunday, then it is celebrated the next day on Monday.
One aspect of federal holidays that may be confusing to foreigners (and, indeed, to many Americans at times) is that, under the federalist system, the federal government has the power to set holidays only for the federal government itself; it cannot mandate states, municipalities, private corporations, etc., to observe these holidays.

キング牧師誕生日（１月の第３月曜日）
キング牧師の誕生日なのに固定されていないのは不思議に感じるけど、連休にしようという魂胆なのね。
Birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (third Monday in January) / American Holidays
標準的な慣習はないけど（大きい黒人コミュニティがある南部の都市ならパレードをする）、多くの人がチャリティや地域貢献をこの日に行う。スローガン「当番だ、非番じゃないよ！」が使われていて、人々に「施しをする日」と捉えるよう促している。
There aren’t any standard traditions (although southern cities may hold a parade if they have a large Black community), but many people do charity and community service work on that day. The slogan “A Day On, Not a Day Off!” has been used to encourage people to treat the holiday as a “day of service.”
大統領就任式（１月２０日）
この日があるのは大統領選後の１月なので、４年に一回の頻度。祝日と言えるのかと言う話もあるみたい。
Inauguration Day (January 20) / American Holidays
２０１３年、大統領就任式がキング牧師誕生日と偶然重なり物事が単純になった；だって、就任するのがバラク・オバマ（第二次政権）だったから、みんな納得だよ。
In 2013, Inauguration Day happened to coincide with the Federal Martin Luther King Day holiday, which simplified things; the significance of the fact that the President being inaugurated was Barack Obama (for his second term) was lost on no one.
ワシントン誕生日（２月の第３月曜日）
もちろん、アメリカの初代大統領ジョージ・ワシントンの誕生日。
Washington's Birthday (third Monday in February) / American Holidays
多くの人にとって、この日は店での大バーゲンを意味する。２月にテレビを見ることは君を不思議にさせるだろう、アメリカの創始者達は単に高くない車やマットレスを買えることを確実にしたかったのかってね。
To most people, this day means huge sales at stores. Watching television in February will make you wonder if America’s forefathers simply wanted to ensure they could buy inexpensive cars and mattresses.
戦没者追悼記念日（５月最後の月曜日）
Memorial Day (last Monday in May) / American Holidays
アメリカのために軍務中に死んでいった兵士達を記憶する日。全ての旗は半旗にされる。多くの人にとって、非公式な夏の始まりも意味する。
A holiday for recognizing those soldiers who have died in service to the United States. All flags are lowered to half-mast. To most people it is also the unofficial start of summer.
ジューンティーンス（６月１９日）
奴隷解放を祝う祝日。できたてホヤホヤ。というのも２０２１年にバイデン大統領がサインしたばっかし。日本語訳は横文字カタカナのジューンティーンスみたいね。漢字は諦めたのか・・・（笑）
Juneteenth (June 19) / American Holidays
アメリカでの奴隷解放を祝う、より具体的には、１８６５年６月１９日のテキサス州での奴隷解放の公表。この日は多くのアフリカ系アメリカ人のコミュニティで何年も祝われていたが、２０２１年に公式に連邦政府の祝日に新たに追加された。
Celebrates the emancipation of slaves in the U.S., more specifically when emancipation was announced in Texas on June 19, 1865. The day had been celebrated by communities with large African American populations for years but was officially added as a new federal holiday in 2021.
独立記念日（７月４日）
別名Fourth of July。アメリカが独立した日。どこから独立？ もちろん、イギリスからね。

独立記念日のお祝いは少しの遠慮もなしに行われる、ピクニックやバーベキュー、パレードやカーニバル、コンサートや野球の試合、そして花火。大量の花火。

労働者の日（９月最初の月曜日）
日本で言うところのメーデー。でも日付が違う理由は記事に書いてあります。
Labor Day (first Monday in September) / American Holidays
この日付が採用された理由の一つは５月１日（ヨーロッパなどでの国際労働者の日）が極左グループと結びつきが増大したからだ。この日は夏の終わりの象徴として見られ、多くのアメリカ人はバーベキューや家族旅行で祝う。
The date was chosen partly because of the growing association of May 1 (International Workers’ Day in much of Europe) with radical leftist groups. It has become viewed as the symbolic end of summer, with most Americans celebrating by holding barbecues and going on trips with their family.
コロンブス記念日（１０月第２月曜日）
意欲に燃えるコロンブスがアメリカに上陸した記念日。
Columbus Day (second Monday in October) / American Holidays
コロンブス記念日を祝うことは、アメリカの様々な場所（特に、君が西に向かうなら）で物議を醸しだしている、そこではネイティブアメリカンと彼らと志を同じくするグループが、彼らが差別主義者の人殺しと見做す人物（コロンブス）を称賛することに大反対してるからだ。その結果、いくつかの州や町では、代理の先住民の日を同じ日に設けてもいる。
Celebration of Columbus Day is very controversial in many parts of the country (especially as you head out west), where many Native Americans and like-minded groups have serious objections to the idea of honoring a man who they feel was a racist butcher. As a result, some states and towns have created an alternative Indigenous Peoples Day, held on the same day.
復員軍人の日（１１月１１日）
また軍人関連の祝日。アメドラを見ていれば、軍服着た軍人に会った時「サービスありがとうございます」は自然と口から出てくるはず（笑）
Veterans Day (November 11) / American Holidays
戦没者追悼記念日は死者を称えるものなのに対し、これは全ての兵役経験者（ベテラン）、生きている者死んでいる者、のためのものだ。
Whereas Memorial Day honors the dead, this one is for all veterans, living and dead.
感謝祭（１１月第４木曜日）
Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November) / American Holidays
伝統的には秋の収穫に感謝することを祝福する日だったが、より一般にはマサチューセッツ、プリマスの入植者とネイティブアメリカンが夕食を共にすることに関連付けられる。通常大きなターキーの夕食とパレード、NFLの試合、テレビの特別番組でお祝いされる。
A holiday that traditionally celebrated giving thanks for the fall harvest, but is more commonly associated with the dinner shared by the colonists at Plymouth, Massachusetts and the local Native Americans. It is usually celebrated with a big turkey dinner, parades (including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade), National Football League games, and TV specials.
クリスマス（１２月２５日）
Christmas (December 25) / American Holidays
キリストの誕生を祝う。連邦政府に認められているもので唯一の宗教的な祝日。
Celebrating the birth of Jesus, it is the only religious holiday recognized by the federal government.
