あれ? DifferentってFromじゃないの? Than/Toって何よ?

Different than???

先日紹介した「one, you, they」の違い記事で引用したKey & Peeleのセリフに次のようなセリフがありました：

black ice looks different than white ice

ここで注目は「than」ですね。学校ではdifferent fromと習ったし、比較級でもないのにthanはちょっと違和感じゃないでしょうか。実は私も最初はそうだったはずなんですが、このdifferent thanは非常によく見かけるので、今では不感症になってしまいました。

そこで、これについてちょっと調べてみましょう。

Different [From/Than/To]の違い

（異なる）：方言や時代、使用域に依存して、形容詞different（異なる）は前置詞from, to, and thanの一つを、又は従属接続詞thanを連用するかもしれない。

Pleasure is different from/than/to happiness.

It’s different than (or from what) I expected.

これらの中で、fromは形式張らないセッティングよりも形式的なセッティングでより一般的だ。thanは他の地域よりアメリカでより一般的。toはアメリカでよりUK、オーストラリア、ニュージーランドでより一般的。文章スタイルガイドはしばしばdiffer thanやdiffer toよりdiffer fromが好まれることの類推で、different fromを推奨し、different thanとdifferent toを禁止する。

Usage notes

(not the same): Depending on dialect, time period, and register, the adjective different (“not the same”) may be construed with one of the prepositions from, to, and than, or with the subordinating conjunction than. Pleasure is different from/than/to happiness. It’s different than (or from what) I expected. Of these, from is more common in formal registers than in informal ones; than is more common in the US than elsewhere; and to is more common in the UK, in Australia, and in New Zealand than in the US. Style guides often advocate different from, by analogy with differ from rather than differ than or differ to, and proscribe different than and different to.

ということで、different thanはアメリカ英語の口語で使われるという感じですね。

海外ドラマでのDifferent [From/Than/To]

wiktionaryにはdifferentの３つのパターンが紹介されていましたので、海外ドラマの例をそれぞれピックアップしてみましょう。

Different From

『ビッグバン★セオリー』では、シェルドンはグーニーズのストーリーをパクった筋を話しますが、それを指摘されると筋を少し変えて、これでグーニーズとは完全に違うとdifferent fromで述べます。なにか物語をでっち上げる時に、著名な映画のストーリーをパクるのはよくあるお約束ですね。

シェルドン: Now it’s completely different from Goonies.

Different Than

『フレンズ』からは三つ子を身籠ったフィービー。医者に三つ子を産むのも一人産むのも大した違いはないとdifferent thanで慰められますが・・・。なお、海外ドラマの字幕を確認したところ、different thanの方がdifferent fromより登場頻度が高いですね（25%程度）。まあ、海外ドラマは口語なので当然なのかも。

Different To

流石にアメドラには「different to」は出てこないようでした。そこでBBCの『シャーロック』からは、ワトソンが彼を失ったと考えてたときと違うとdifferent toで述べます。イギリス英語ででてくるという情報は合ってますね。

最後に

今回は違うことを意味する時にdifferentに続く前置詞がfrom/than/toになることを見てみました。個人的に意外だったのが、海外ドラマの登場頻度は既にdifferent thanが主流ということ。それで、自分も不感症になってたのかと納得しました。
