「オリエンタル（Oriental）」は侮辱・軽蔑的か？

「Oriental」の語源と意味
最近知った「オリエンタル」ネタ。
まずオリエントの語源は、地平線上で太陽が顔を出す部分から東。
orient (n.)
１４世紀後期、”東の方角、太陽が最初に見える地平線の部分”
late 14c., “the direction east; the part of the horizon where the sun first appears,”
そこから形容詞形で一般に東を表すようになり、大文字Orientalで西欧から見た東側の国々を意味するようになります。
Oriental
地中海の東側の領域、ローマ帝国や初期のキリスト教世界を超えて。中近東、中東、極東。今は特に東アジア（１５世紀から）。

「Oriental」に軽蔑的な響き
なお、我々日本人も上の定義からすればオリエンタルなわけで、別にそう言われても「あっそう」という感じですけど、アメリカではどうも使うべきでない用語になっているみたいですね：

人を表すのにオリエンタルを使うのは時代遅れで、北米では、可能性として侮辱的と取られるかもしれない、英国ではしかし、普通に使われ軽蔑的とは考えられていない。

ここで、人を表すというのが重要で、オリエンタルな女神とかオリエンタルな絨毯とか宝石真珠では使用されています。
法律で「Oriental」を禁止
このOrientalという用語を廃止する動きがアメリカで過去あったようです。
ニューヨーク州の公的文書での使用を禁止する法律：

一般での使用は言うまでもなく、「アジア系アメリカ人」「アジア太平洋諸島住民」が「オリエンタル」に取って代わり始めてから３０年経つが、いくつかのニューヨーク州の公的記録ではこの時代遅れの用語がいまだ使われている・・・

海外ドラマでの「Oriental」
冒頭に掲げた『フォーエバー ～人生の意味』のセリフも、これで意味が分かりますね。友達同士の会話ですが、一人が「Oriental」という表現を使うと、もう一人が言っちゃいけない言葉で今がアジア系アメリカ人とフォローします。しかし、最初の人物は自分は７０年代生まれと言ってその表現を固辞するんですね（笑）
ということは、７０〜８０年代あたりに「Oriental」という表現がAsian-Americanに置き換わっていったのかもしれません。

アメリカでのこの用語への基本的批判は１９７０年代の文化的変革の中で始まった。彼は言う「アメリカでの６０年代・７０年代初期の反戦運動で多くのアジア系アメリカ人が用語「オリエンタル」をアジア人を永遠の正反対の「他人」として人種区別する欧米の過程と同一視した、欧米と東洋の間に区別を付けることによって。」

the basic criticism of the term began in the U.S. during a cultural shift in the 1970s. He has said: “With the U.S.A. anti-war movement in the ’60s and early ’70s, many Asian Americans identified the term ‘Oriental’ with a Western process of racializing Asians as forever opposite ‘others’”, by making a distinction between “Western” and “Eastern” ancestral origins.
奥さまは魔女
そこで、その時代の海外ドラマを見てみると『奥さまは魔女』では、日本人顧客のミシモトさん（多分西本の間違い）を接待するのに、サマンサがレストランに連れて行けと言うと、「Orientalでは自宅に招くのが重要」とばかり、サマンサの家に無理やり連れて来ようとする上司ラリー（笑） この時点では差別感は全く出ていません。

GLOW
これが８０年代の女子プロを扱った『GLOW』では、オリエンタルと言われた瞬間ムッとするアジア系アメリカ人ジェニーの姿があります。
最後に
今回はアメリカで「オリエンタル（Oriental）」に侮辱的な意味が付いていて使われなくなった歴史を知って記事にしてみました。日本人からすればちょっと驚き。
Wiktionaryでは、英国では未だに普通に使われるとありましたが、海外ドラマではそのような例は見つけられませんでした。
アメリカでは法律の文書自体にオリエンタルが入って区別していたのですから、そりゃ時代の経過とともに侮蔑的な響きを帯びるのは仕方ないのかもしれません。オバマ大統領がそれに終止符を打ったと。それでは〜
