形容詞あるある

試験には出てこないけど、ドラマに頻繁に出てくる形容詞(-y)を紹介していきます。

Cheesy /tʃíːzi/ 安っぽい、低俗な、あからさまに本物でない

最初は、チーズから来たcheesy。”チーズの”という意味ももちろんありますが、ドラマでは頻繁に”安っぽい”という意味で使われます。次は『ビッグバン★セオリー』シーズン７ エピソード９から。場面は、感謝祭の話で盛り上がるいつものメンバー。ペニーが元カレザックとのことを話し始めると事態は急転します。ペニーとしては、いかにも偽物な安っぽいチャペルでの結婚式ごっこに思えた今ではおかしい思い出も、実際婚約中のレナードにしてみれば大ごと。ハワード家でのパーティー中も二人は大げんか。

ペ：I spent one in Vegas.
レ：You did?
ペ：Yeah, back when I was dating Zack.
　　It was actually more fun than I thought.
　　We gambled, we went to one of those cheesy wedding chapels,
　　we had a really good turkey dinner.
　　Which was surprising, since we were at a strip club.
レ：Wait, you went to a chapel?
ペ：Yeah.
　　Why?
　　We had one of those silly fake weddings.
レ：Penny...
　　you know those are real, right?
ペ：No, they're not.
レ：Yeah, they are.
ペ：No, they're not.
レ：Yeah, they are.
シ：He's right.

Grumpy /grʌ́mpi 、不機嫌な、気難しい

次の形容詞は、grumpy。一日中顔のシワを寄せていて笑わない感じの人を形容するのにぴったり。crabbyも同様の意味。手元のDBだとgrumpyが２７件、crabbyが２０件ヒットしました。２７件の中の一つが、『ギルモア・ガールズ』シーズン２ エピソード４のレインとローリーの再会のシーン。レインは韓国の親族のもとに半ば強制的に送られてしまい、しかも飛行機チケットが片道分だけしか無かったこともあって一生韓国ぐらしかと心配していたのですが、無事戻ってこれて、大親友のローリーと再会を果たす場面。Popeの顔が気難しいのはtarmacにキスしているからなんて、なんて機知に富む子供たちでしょうか。

ロ：Oh, my God. Lane!
レ：I'm back!
ロ：I see.
レ：Did you ever think this day would come?
ロ：I had hopes, dreams.
レ：I escaped from Korea. I'm home.
　　Hi, Lorelai.
Lo：Welcome home, sweetie.

レ：It was hot, I burned my lips.
ロ：That's why the Pope always looks grumpy.
