色でいろいろあるある

色は、文化が違えば 意味合いも自然と違ってきます。ここではそんな色にまつわる表現をピックアップ。

red tape / お役所仕事

別にbureaucracyなんて長い単語を覚える必要は無かったんですね。red tapeならすぐ使えそうじゃないですか。ドラマの中でも当然使われますよ。

次は『ブレイキング・バッド』シーズン３ エピソード９から。ジェシーの禁ドラッグ集会での発言。主催者から何かシェアすることはないかと聞かれて、ガスの保護の元メス工場で働き出したことを、コインランドリー会社で働き出した風に装って話し出します。こう見ると、my bossはウォルターでownerはガスのことですね。会うことさえ出来ない、と。red tapeとジェシーが言ったのには理由があって、このシーンの前に、ジェシーがメスの出荷量が少し超過していることに気づき、ウォルターに超過分を引くことを提案しますが、一蹴されます。３ヶ月で９６ミリオン＄と１０回も検算したのに（笑）。ウォルター曰く、物事を複雑にするな、１回のバッチで１回の出荷である、と。そういうこともあって、この発言につながったのでしょうね。

主：How's it all going?
　　Anything you wanna tell us about?
ジ：What, like my interesting life?
　　One day pretty much bleeds into the next.
　　Been working a lot.
　　Got a job.
　　Job is good.
　　It's in a Laundromat.
　　It's totally corporate.
主：Corporate Laundromat.
ジ：It's, like, rigid. All kinds of red tape.
　　My boss is a dick.
　　The owner, super dick.
　　I'm not worthy to meet him, but everybody's scared of the dude.
　　The place is full of dead-eyed douche bags...
　　...the hours suck and nobody knows what's going on, so...
主：Sounds kind of Kafkaesque.
ジ：Yeah.
　　Totally Kafkaesque.

Breaking Bad シーズン３ エピソード９

Rose-colored / バラ色の

この使い方は日本語と全く同じです。バラ色眼鏡を通して見るなんて、ポジティブ思考でよさげだけれど、下記場面では、かなり皮肉っぽい響きですね。

『ブレイキング・バッド』シーズン４ エピソード１０では、ソウルとスカイラーの会話でこの表現が使われています。ベネキー社を助けるため、遠い親戚の遺産が出てきた設定で大金を弁護士ソウル経由でベネキーに渡すスカイラー。当然そのお金を会社のために使うと思っていたスカイラーは、ばら色眼鏡はかけないソウルに意外な事実を知らされます。ベンツ買ってるじゃん！

ソ：I wouldn't have come if it wasn't important.
ス：Okay?
　　What is it?
ソ：Well, I went ahead and met with your Mr. Beneke. Right?
　　Which, I will say again, loudly and for the record, bad idea.
ス：Yes, but it is better than prison, correct?
ソ：Marginally. Which is why I disbursed the funds as you requested.
ス：All right, good.
ソ：Yeah. I can't believe he actually bought it.
　　Great-aunt Birgit. What?
　　But you called it. People see zeroes dance before their eyes...
　　...it's like highway hypnosis.
ス：So, what's the problem?
ソ：Let's just say, you and I don't wear the same rose-colored glasses where Johnny Fabulous is concerned.
　　So I kept an eye on his bank accounts, and pulled his credit report.
　　If you would, note the time on that.
ス：Three fifty-four p.m. yesterday.
ソ：Three hours after leaving my office.
ス：He bought a Mercedes SL550.
