地名であるある

ドラマを観てると、地名が意外な意味を持っていることがわかって面白かったりします。中国（china）・日本（japan）もそうですね。

Shanghai / 人を騙して無理やり水夫にする

上海にこんな意味があるなんて。上海の人は怒ってもいいかも。昔は、騙して無理やり船に載せられて、そのまま水夫 or 魚の餌なんてあったのかもしれません。そこから転じて、無理やり〜させる的な意味で使われるっぽいですね。

次は『ギルモア・ガールズ』シーズン５ エピソード５から。ローリーがディーンとまた付き合いだしたことに驚くルーク。ローレライはルークのように質問攻めにされる我が娘が不憫でまわりに言ってないのでした。強制的に（付き合ってる事実を）知らせちゃったから、質問を取り下げるのなら取り下げていいのよ、というのに上海を使っていますね。こう書くと、パズルゲームですね。

ル：Dean? Rory's seeing Dean?
ロ：Yeah, you knew that.
ル：No, I didn't.
ロ：Wha - Didn't I tell you?
ル：No. Since when?
ロ：Since she got back from Europe.
ル：I don't believe it.
ロ：Haven't you seen them walking around?
ル：No. Were you hiding it?
ロ：No. I just - I wasn't sure when they wanted people to know or how I should tell people without getting hammered with a bunch of questions.
ル：Was this before he left his wife or after? Did - did he leave her for Rory?
ロ：Like those. Questions just like those.
ル：Sorry, it's just, you know, Dean and Rory together again.
ロ：Well, you can back out if you want. I kind of shanghaied you there.
ル：No. We can do it. I just have to wrap my mind around it. Dean.

Gilmore Girls シーズン５ エピソード５

One-Mississippi, two-Mississippi / いーち、にーい（ゲーム中に秒を数えるときに使う）

コレ最初に聞いた時まったく意味不明だった表現です。WIkipediaによれば、

Children in the United States and Canada often count "One-Mississippi, two-Mississippi" during informal games such as hide and seek to approximate counting by seconds.

とのことで、ワン　ミシシッピーというのがちょうど１秒だとか。日本人ならもうちょっとかかりそうですから、ハワイくらい短いのがいいかもしれません。お風呂場で１００ミシシッピーまで数えたら逆上せてしまいますからね。

閑話休題。次は『ビッグバン★セオリー』 シーズン８ エピソード７に出てきたペニーの部屋の前で花束持って立ち尽くす医者にレナードが話しかけるところから。このお医者さんもオタク気質でおもちゃコレクター。さらに悪いことには、女性が長く話しかけてくると、それだけで気があると思ってしまうちょっと変わり者（weirdo）。その時間を計るのにミシシッピーを使っていますね。せっかくチーズファクトリー以外の職を見つけたペニーも災難ですね。

レ：Can I help you?
医：Oh, hi.
　　Uh, does Penny live here?
レ：May I ask why?
医：Well, uh...
　　I-I met her at my office, she winked at me.
　　And, uh...I-I came hoping to initiate a romantic relationship.
レ：Okay, um...Look, I'm pretty sure she didn't wink at you.
医：Oh, she did.
　　Seductively, like this.
　　And then she touched my arm for two Mississippis.
　　Like, you know, one Mississippi, two...
レ：I got it, I got it.

もう一つDBにあったので。『フレンズ』シーズン１ エピソード５の冒頭のシーンから。いつものカフェでのトーク中にアンジェラが入ってきます。すぐ話しかけては男がすたると、ジョーイは３ミシシッピーまで数えてから話しかけに行きます。さて、どうなるんでしょうか？

ア：Hi, Joey.
ジ：Oh, my God. Angela.
モ：Wow. Being dumped by you obviously agrees with her.
フ：Are you gonna go over there?
ジ：No. Yeah. No.
　　Okay, but not yet.
　　I don't wanna seem too eager.
　　One Mississippi, two Mississippi, three Mississippi.
　　That seems pretty cool.
