Untranslatable Word(1) Serendipity / Gobbledegook - ドラマの中の英語

今回は、あれ？こんな単語が？というのを２つ。ちなみにこの調査はToday Translations, June 2004ということなので、そうとう昔、インターネットが大衆化したくらいの年でしょうか。

Whimsy・・・風変わりな、奇抜な考え方

whimというもう一つの名詞形は「思いつき、気まぐれ」という意味。英検一級くらいの単語だと思うので、知ってる人は知ってる単語。形容詞のwhimsicalがよく使われる。 場面はThe Office(US)のマイケルの単独インタビュー。なんでも、売り物のコピー用紙に金色の紙を混ぜておいて、それがあたった会社には10%オフをするという奇抜な発想。もっと他の方法はなかったのか。まさにwhimsy。

"It's probably the best idea anybody has ever had. Three days ago, I slipped five pieces of gold paper into random paper shipments. This entitles the customer to 10% off of their total order. It will be a day for them that is full of whimsy and full of excitement and full of fantasy."

Spam・・・スパム

こちらは既に日本語化が完了している単語。スパムフィルターとかもう普通に使います。 The Big Bang Theoryの次の場面はペニーのメールのスパム設定をしてあげてるレナード。ウォロウィッツの水着写真メールが単なる日焼け跡だったなんて。そりゃ、スパムフォルダ行きですよね。

"There you go. Now any e-mail from Wolowitz will go right into your spam folder."

"Thanks. The e-mail doesn't bother me as much as the vacation pictures of him in a bathing suit."

"Yeah, I got the same one, and that's not a bathing suit. It's a tan line."
